Additional information:
St. Francis Vineyards & Winery was formally established in 1979, but its history begins in 1971, when Joseph Martin purchased a 100-acre property in the tiny Sonoma Valley community of Kenwood. The original intent behind the purchase was to produce wine grapes rather than wines, a project which at first glance might have seemed an unlikely undertaking for Joe Martin.
Born in 1930 in the central valley town of Stockton, California, Joseph Martin, by his late thirties, had spent two decades in San Francisco's corporate world in the furniture sales and export business. To turn from white-collar executive to vine-grower, however, was for Martin a transformation of only modest scale. His childhood and adolescence were spent on his family's dairy and fruit farm in Stockton, a training he carried into his later role as vineyardist. The two year search for the right property ended with a portion of the Kenwood estate and a substantial task: though originally planted in vines in 1910, it had since become largely orchards, which were cleared and replaced, over the first few years, with 90 acres of vines. |
